Richard D. Lang is a founding partner of Baldini Lang LLC. He is committed to providing clients with high quality legal services in an efficient and effective manner. With over 25 years of executive-level domestic and international legal and business experience in the financial services industry, Rich has a unique understanding of his clients' legal risk management needs.
Rich has been appointed to the Citizen's Ethics Advisory Board for the State of Connecticut by the Speaker of the House of Representatives. The nine-member Board is the governing body of the Office of State Ethics, which administers the State of Connecticut Code of Ethics for public officials, state employees, and lobbyists.
Prior to forming Baldini Lang LLC, Rich was the Chief Ethics Officer for HSBC Bank USA, where he was responsible for designing, developing, and implementing a program in support of a strong ethical culture; updating and administering the code of ethics, advising senior management regarding ethics issues, trends, and best practices; and managing the anti-bribery & anti-corruption program.
Rich was previously the Chief Compliance Officer & Acting General Counsel for Open Solutions Inc., where he was responsible for M&A, corporate governance, employment law, and managing all client disputes and billing collection actions. Rich led the company legal team in the successful $1 billion acquisition by Fiserv Inc.
Rich’s compliance responsibilities at Open Solutions included management of examinations by the NCUA, OCC, OTS, FDIC, and Federal Reserve. Rich also ensured compliance with consumer banking laws and regulations, and he coordinated all FDIC receivership activities relating to client banks. In addition, Rich managed the information security and privacy program.
Prior to joining Open Solutions, Rich founded Lang Compliance and Ethics Consulting, which provided compliance and ethics program evaluation and litigation consulting services, and TheEthicsOffice.com, a complete, web-based compliance and ethics program for small businesses.
Before his consulting role, Rich was the Chief Ethics, Compliance & Privacy Officer for Unum Group. Rich joined Unum to design and implement a comprehensive compliance and ethics program in the wake of allegations (aired on 60 Minutes and Dateline broadcasts) regarding Unum’s disability insurance claims handling practices.
Rich began his legal career as an attorney at Travelers, and he worked for Citigroup/Travelers in various legal and compliance roles, eventually being named the General Counsel for Citigroup’s international insurance operations. Rich also served as the Chief Compliance Officer, Chief Privacy Officer, and Anti-Money Laundering Compliance Officer for Travelers.
An honors graduate of Marquette University, Rich received his J.D. with honors from the University of Connecticut School of Law. He is a member of the Connecticut and South Dakota Bars.
Rich and his wife Ann have five children and live in South Glastonbury. They attend St. Dunstan Church and are licensed foster parents.
